Nissan has developed jointly with Hitachi Ltd. a compact and lightweight
permanent magnet synchronous motor that delivers high efficiency. Rare earth
magnets, providing much higher magnetic force than traditional materials,
are used as the permanent magnet material. Simulations were conducted to
analyze their electromagnetic properties in order to design the optimum
magnetic circuit. This made it possible to obtain high overall motor efficiency
of approximately 90% under ordinary driving conditions. Moreover,because
the motor is capable of operating at an ultra-high speed of 13,100 rpm,
it was possible to reduce the motor weight by about 40% compared with an
induction motor developed previously by Nissan.
