| Nissan proudly sponsored the First Annual Advanced
Automotive Battery Conference held in Las Vegas, Nevada U.S.A. The
4 day conference attracted battery and automotive specialists from
around the world. Topics focusing on emerging 42V and HEV energy storage
systems included high-power battery tutorials, reviews of market conditions,
and status of advanced vehicle technology in addition to individual
sessions focused on the Pb-acid, NiMH, and Li-Ion battery chemistries.
Future electro-chemical devices like ultracapacitors and fuel cells
were also briefly discussed. Nissan's sponsorship help create a "United
Nations" atmosphere by providing for the Japanese-to-English
and English-to-Japanese simultaneous translation. This system allowed
for an easy exchange of information between English and Japanese speaking
            conference attendees.
Mr. Takeshi Miyamoto presented Nissan's development of a Lithium
Manganate cathode battery system for HEV use. Cell specific power
for this system was over 1,500 W/kg and round trip efficiency was
95.3%. His presentation also discussed the battery cooling system,
battery management system, and field test data for these systems.
Mr. Tatsuo Horiba of Shin-Kobe Electric Machinery Co. then presented
detailed information on the Lithium Manganate battery including
material improvements which show cycle life is now comparable to
              Lithium Cobalt chemistries.

The conference was so successful, the Second Advanced Automotive
Battery Conference is being planned for February 4-7, 2002. At that
time, electro-chemical and energy storage specialists will again
be able to gather in Las Vegas to share information and developments
for this important electric vehicle technology.
